HOW DANIEL PEARL SHOWED MORAL COURAGE
Daniel Pearl Biography
Daniel Pearl was born on October 19, 1963 in Princeton New Jersey. He grew up in Los Angeles with a love for Music. He went to Stanford University, and in 1990, Daniel became a part of The Wall Street Journal. His position at the wall street journal was the South Asia Bureau Chief. In October 2000, Pearl moved to Mumbai India for his work as being a journalist. Pearl went to Pakistan for research that he was doing on an Al-Qaeda member when he was kidnapped on January 23, 2002. People across the world wanted him to be released, but his capturers held him captive and eventually killed him on February 21, 2002. Daniel Pearl’s wife was pregnant with their baby boy, and he named him Adam just days before Daniel was captured.
An Al-Qaeda group was the one that captured him, and they were against Israelis and all of Western culture. Daniel Pearl was apart of both things that Al-Qaeda members completely disagreed with, which was Israel and America. Daniel had citizenship in both countries. This whole entire situation happened not to far from 9/11, and this shows how recent this deadly terrorist attack occurred. The U.S. must have been in a very tense position with Al-Qaeda, and other terrorist groups against Western culture.
The pearl project was started at Georgetown University so that they would be able to find out what had happened to him, and who and how many people were involved in killing this man. The family of Daniel started an organization called the Daniel Pearl foundation. It is about the person Daniel was, and it explains the message about his strive for equality. There was also a book published about Daniel, which holds many articles that he had written as one of the journalists for Wall Street.
Moral Courage:
Daniel Pearl was a person who represented equality, and individuality. Daniel Pearl even continued to show who he was, by screaming, “My father is Jewish, my mother is Jewish, and I am Jewish,” just before his execution. This proves that he was a very powerful person, and that it takes a lot of moral courage to openly show the true parts of you that make you different in any way. Daniel represented moral courage, because he believed strongly in who he was, and he still literally screamed out his individuality in words, and the religion that he belonged to even though he was being killed.
Through this significant ending to his life, he really proved to himself and to others that he didn’t even try to protect himself, but he continued to symbolize the importance of what was happening, and how he would be able to get the best out of the situation. Few people today can reflect towards Daniel Pearl, and say that they have ever been in such a terrible situation. Most likely out of the few people, their first priority would be not trying to prove to the enemy who they were, but to protect themselves and one another. Daniel Pearl might have been motivated by the fact that he knew that he was going to be killed, and that there wasn’t a way around the situation. He simply made the best of the circumstances, and he used this opportunity as a time to show the values that he represented.
Overall, Daniel Pearl was a man who didn’t die in vain, but a person who died with an accomplishment of expressing his chance of hope. This hope consists of the slightest glimpse that evil wouldn’t overcome the positive human beings in life. Daniel completely proved a point, and he showed the Al-Qaeda kidnappers that Daniel was still the biggest person, and that he had the power with his words to make such a strong statement.
